WP5:
Digital services for renovation design and KPI assessment

Lead by CSTB

Objective

Define the AEGIR solution specifications and requirements and coordinate the technical development of the AEGIR integrated envelope solution for sustainable energy building renovations.

This Work Package is specifically dedicated to developing a powerful ecosystem of digital services. The core aim is to significantly improve the design process for building renovations utilizing AEGIR envelopes. This development effort actively leverages the valuable expertise and existing tools contributed by our project partners. Working collaboratively, we are establishing a more streamlined and efficient renovation process centered around AEGIR solutions. A primary focus involves setting up a central data platform, known as the Common Data Environment or CDE. This platform utilizes BIM standards to ensure seamless and effective data management throughout the project lifecycle. Furthermore, we are developing intelligent tools specifically designed to evaluate various renovation options based on their energy efficiency and generation capabilities. Specialized services are also being created to configure façade modules, manage ventilation design, and calculate associated costs. To support informed choices, a dedicated Key Primary Indicators (KPI) assessment service is being developed for selecting the most suitable renovation packages. Ensuring and validating that all these digital services work together seamlessly within the CDE is a critical aspect of this Work Package, thereby creating a truly integrated workflow.

Activities carried out

  • Designing the architecture and capturing requirements for central platform to support the entire AEGIR digital workflow from desin to operation
  • Developing a service to automate building energy performance evaluation for different design scenarios by transforming BIM models and calculating energy savings and consumption.
  • Developing a service to automate the calculation of the building’s solar potential, generate layouts for solar systems, and provide contextual KPIs within 3D interfaces.
  • Providing services to facilitate the configuration of the prefabricated AEGIR façade elements, focusing on duct integration and module setup.
  • Developing a module to assess the feasibility and performance (heat loss, pressure drops, consumption, cost) of integrating ventilation ducts and other HVAC networks within the façade.
  • Providing a configurator service for designing and visualizing the aesthetic and technical layout of the façade, enabling module tracking and automating design processes based on constraints.
  • Developing a user-friendly service for assessing various KPIs (Energy, Environmental, Comfort, Economic) to compare design/renovation scenarios and aid in selecting the most suitable optios.
  • Extending the core CDE by implementing connectors to integrate the design services, ensuring interoperability and a proper information workflow using standard technologies.

Partners involved

CSTB (Lead)

CSTB’s objective is to imagine the buildings and cities of the future by guiding and securing sustainable construction and renovation projects, to improve the quality of life by anticipating the effects of climate change. It focuses on five key activities: research and expertise, assessment, certification, testing and the dissemination of knowledge. Its field of expertise covers construction products, buildings, and their integration into neighbourhoods and cities. cstb.fr

What has been achieved at date?

The AEGIR Common Data Environment (CDE) integrates four core components to optimize building renovation processes. The Collaboration Suite (CS), based on the KROQI platform, enables document management, BIM model validation, and stakeholder collaboration via a SaaS web platform. The Digital Twin (DT) combines static BIM models, dynamic sensor data, and simulations to enhance building performance, supported by standardized ontologies and APIs.

The KPI Assessment Service provides a dashboard for data-driven decision-making, while the Centralized Product Database stores circular economy and physical properties of AEGIR products, aiding renovation assessments. These components operate within a loosely coupled, service-oriented architecture, ensuring flexibility and interoperability.

Several design services are integrated into the CDE:

  • The Building Energy Performance Simulation Service uses EnergyPlus to convert IFC models into IDF files for energy simulations.
  • The Building Solar Energy Generation Design Service assesses solar irradiance and PV capacity, supporting façade integration and performance tracking.
  • The Ventilation Ducts Integration Service optimizes ductwork design for residential buildings, ensuring compliance with noise and airflow standards.
  • The Facade Configurator Service is a user-friendly tool for estimating panel layouts, considering energy, circularity, and resource-saving KPIs to guide renovation decisions.

This ecosystem streamlines renovation design, execution, and monitoring through open protocols and modular architecture.

Results

  • AEGIR Common Data Environment (CDE) fonctional & technical specifications
