Ductwork Systems for Efficient Building-Integrated Technologies

Indoor air quality is determined by the supply of fresh air and the removal of contaminated air. When contaminated extract air is discharged directly from a building into the environment, the heat it con-tains is lost without being utilised. Recovering this heat from the extract air contributes to improved energy efficiency and results in a more efficient building.

Thanks to the support of the AEGIR project, Westaflex will deploy three demonstration sites in 2026:

  • Boën-sur-Lignon, France – for residential ventilation

  • Oradea, Romania – for residential ventilation

  • Denmark – for non-residential ventilation

Ductwork Innovations

Westaflex, an AEGIR project partner, is developing new ventilation components for prefabricated fa-çades. The innovations cover not only the ventilation components themselves but also the way they are coordinated with other building disciplines. Key areas of innovation include:

  • Integration of air ducts into prefabricated façades
  • Combination of façade system elements
  • Combination of centralised and decentralised ventilation
  • Route planning for air ducts within buildings
  • Coordination across specialist areas

Three European Demonstration Sites for Real-Life Validation

The three demonstration sites will showcase complete building renovations, delivering measurable energy savings, improved user comfort, and reliable system performance under real-life conditions.

Oradea, Romania
The residential building will be fitted with prefabricated façade elements. The air ducts will be routed both inside the building and externally along the existing façade. This duct routing requires close coordination between the various specialists.

Oradea, Romania

Denmark
In this non-residential building, the air ducts will be integrated into the prefabricated façade elements. The main challenge is that the installation of the façade elements must occur simultaneously with the connection of the air ducts between individual façade elements and the wall. This requires the use of entirely new types of ventilation components.

Through the AEGIR project, westaflex’s innovation contributes to demonstrating the practical feasibility of integrated ductwork renovation solutions that can be deployed across Europe to meet ambitious climate and energy targets.
